Parri Estate is a family wine company established by Peter, Alice and John Phillips in 1998. Our aim is to produce wines that are a unique reflection of the region in which they are grown and the focus is very much on producing high quality estate grown wines, and equally, remain committed to both the environment and the consumer.
The Kaurna people, traditional owners of the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula used the word “Parri” to describe the rivers, creeks and gullies that surrounded them.
In 2004 the Phillips family purchased an a vineyard in McLaren Flat (shown in the second photo) which is planted with vines up to 60 year of age. The Mediterranean climate of McLaren Vale produces bold, full-bodied reds. This diversity between the two regions allows Parri Estate to produce estate grown wines which show true varietal and regional characteristics.
The Region - The Fleurieu Peninsula
In 1802 French explorer Nicholas Baudin, aboard the ship ‘Le Géographe’ and named the Fleurieu Peninsula in honour of his sponsor Charles de Fleurieu, one of Napoleon’s ministers. The French connection was enhanced in 1848 when one of the earliest vignerons, Buxton Laurie arrived in the Southern Fleurieu region. Buxton’s property named ‘Southcote’ is situated on Crows Nest Road, Port Elliot. By 1866 Southcote was in full production, producing about 1,500 gallons of wine and having planted some 4,000 vines in the district. Unfortunately, in the late 19th Century bushfires in the area wiped out the vines.
Parri Estate’s first vines were planted on the 82 acre property in 1998 on Sneyd Rd just south of Mt Compass and is situated 260 metres above sea level and a mean January temperature of just 19 degrees.
Mc Laren Vale
Since the 1870’s McLaren Vale has been producing some of Australia’s best wines. In 2004 the Phillips family purchased the former ‘Ingoldby’ property at McLaren Vale with historical significance. Situtated just 40km south of Adelaide’s CBD, Parri Estate’s 14 acre vineyard is planted with Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon. The property is just 50 metres above sea level and cool gully winds occur in summer slowing the ripening period down during vintage to produce full flavoured wines of high quality and a January mean temperature of 22 degrees.
